Goals
Our goals were to create an online version of DEF's existing application. The original was
a Microsoft Access database with limited searching capabilities. Students had to be present
at the library in order to perform the searches on an available PC. We were to re-purpose
the application for the Internet and improve upon its search abilities.
Challenges
-
Represent complex funding criteria that must be met by potential awardees. Some of
these criteria are education level, race (including students of mixed races), past and
future schools, major(s), religion(s) and geographical region (with a hierarchy to
include cities, counties and states).
-
Create a user-friendly website for prospective students to easily search for funding
available to them, based on their demographical and historical information.
-
Create a secure database-powered administration area to facilitate the input of
funds with all the needed requirements and information.

Methods
ASP.NET was used to serve dynamic content from a MS SQL Server database. This allowed for rich
editing and searching of the needed data for the users of the system. Macromedia's Contribute
software offered a wonderful tool to allow office administrators, with no knowledge of HTML, the
ability to edit content throughout areas of the site that display standard content.
