NFIP: Insurance Agent Training

The National Flood Insurance Program services thousands and thousands of Americans across the country. Agents of this program need to be very perceptive and well-versed in the current materials issued by the government. Our training website still keeps agents "in the loop" years later.

Goals

The goals of this project were to create an online system that trains and prepares flood insurance agents to properly market, sell, and service flood insurance policies. To achieve this, the client requested the conversion of existing training materials as well as the creation of new highly interactive online applications, supported by easily referenced content materials.

Challenges

  • Integrate streaming media technologies with interactive Flash content as well as HTML.
  • Design an online testing application for agents so that they may qualify for a certificate of completion for training.
  • Generate reports for NFIP staff on testing statistics.
  • Create a portal website to house all aspects of the agent training.

Tools Used

Windows 2000 Advanced Server/IIS 5.0
SQL Server 7
Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev 4
Macromedia Homesite 4.5
Macromedia Fireworks 4
Adobe Photoshop

Methods

To make this an effective tool, the site structure was designed utilizing Macromedia Flash, HTML, ASP, and Microsoft SQL Server. Upon entering the site, a check of the viewers browser determines the presence of the Macromedia Flash Player. If the player exists, the viewer is allowed to enter, if not, the viewer is directed to download the needed software.

The training was designed in three major sections. Basic Agent Training, Gold Level Training, and Platinum Level Training (currently under development). Each section offers testing upon completion to certify the agent. By using a mix of technologies, both visual, and technological, a balance of attractive yet very functional training is achieved.
